      Chapter Twenty

"That you love him so very much," the words echoed in Grace's mind as, sitting next to Alex in the car, they sped to the airport. "That you love him so very much," kept repeating itself as the airplane lifted off the ground and headed toward home. "That you love Alex so very much," she thought, and stole a glance at her husband as he sat next to her. He seemed engrossed in a magazine, his dark head bent, deep thought lines creasing his forehead. Was he really reading, or was he regretting his past actions? Even though Pat had apologized upon reaching the car, how could a man forgive such a harsh statement? Yet he'd heard himself compared to her first husband before, and never in his favor.

"That you love him so very much," the words came again and wouldn't go away. If she loved Alex it wasn't in the same way she had loved Johnny Reaves. But then, hadn't she known for a long time that what she and Johnny had wasn't really love? Not the enduring, till death do us part kind.

What then did she feel for Alex, she questioned herself, leaning back in the chair and shutting her eyes. Even though she could no longer see him, she could still feel his presence, warm and close. She had known for many years that she deeply respected Alexander Edwards. Respected his honesty and willingness to work hard for what he wanted. Now she knew that in his firm, brisk way he was also kind and gentle. She loved to see the boyish smile that could brighten his face and shine out from behind his dark eyes. She felt comfortable and safe when she was by him and she wanted to make him feel the same way about her. When she thought of the possibility of his suffering another heart attack, of having him taken away from her, she felt frightened and hollow inside.

Why hadn't she realized that what she felt for him was love? Why had it taken someone who didn't know him at all to see how she felt? But then, if Pat didn't know Alex, she did know her sister.

Grace glanced across the aisle toward the silent girl who lay back in her seat, her eyes shut, her young face in sleep more like the girl Grace had known and loved.

Grace felt Alex's warm hand on hers, as if aware of her concern and she gratefully took his hand in her own.

Love Alex? Yes, she loved him. But what of his feelings for her? Hadn't he given his word that he would never make any romantic advances toward her? In the months they had lived together as man and wife, she had seen no indication that he had reason to regret such a promise.

With a sigh Grace leaned back. She realized suddenly that this new awareness of her feelings wasn't going to bring her the peace and happiness she would have liked. In fact, it was likely to cause her a great deal of additional hurt and frustration. For the children's sake, and her own pride, she told herself, she must never left Alex suspect her true feelings for him.
